Fathers have a special role that is truly irreplaceable, making Father’s Day especially meaningful for many families. Numerous studies show that the absence of a father in the home has a devastating effect on children. Any family with a dad who loves God and applies godly principles to his parenting is exceedingly blessed.

1.) Godly Fathers Fear the Lord
A good father may be head of the household, but God is the head of the father. The wife and kids can be confident that the man won’t lord his position over them, when he has reverence for Almighty God. With God as Lord, the home is a safe place for children.
One of the wonderful scripture promises for a household with a godly dad is in Proverbs 14:26:
“In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge.” NKJV
2.) Godly Fathers Instruct their Children
There was a time when the schools in the U.S. taught school using the Bible as a primary resource. In godly homes, fathers still instruct their children according to God’s Word.
Conversation in a household with a godly father includes scripture on a regular basis, in keeping with Deuteronomy 6:6-7:
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” NKJV
3.) Godly Fathers have a Pleasing Manner
The Bible is very specific about the type of relationship a father is to have with his children. In Ephesians, it specifies that fathers should not exasperate their children. “Exasperate” means infuriate, irritate intensely, provoke, vex, or enrage.
How wonderful that godly fathers, instead, have a pleasing way of dealing with their children, which is the opposite of exasperating them. Ephesians 6:4:
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” NKJV
4.) Godly Fathers Listen
Having a father in the home doesn’t necessarily mean that the man is “present.” Godly fathers take the time to listen to their children.
Great communication is a wonderful gift for any household. James 1:19:
“So, then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;” NKJV
5.) Godly Fathers Apply Discipline
A loving home includes discipline, which is about more than getting a spanking. Godly fathers are devoted to teaching their children how to be safe and to live a productive and fulfilling life, and that is probably impossible without parental discipline.
God also disciplines all of his children. It’s part of learning and growing into a godly person. Hebrews 12:7:
“Endure your suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?” NET
Great Bible Verses for Father’s Day
There are many Bible verses that could be perfect for Father’s Day. Perhaps Dad’s favorite is Colossians 3:20: “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.” For kids to take a godly father’s instructions to heart and obey them may be the best gift for Father’s Day.
