The One Word that Sums Up Christianity
One Word Of God
There is actually a name that sums up the secret to life and eternity, and that name is Jesus.
But what word is there that tells the whole story about Christianity?
The most powerful word that may sum things up most perfectly is:
Believe.
When we believe in Jesus and believe what God says, it’s powerful. There are some amazing promises that only apply to people who believe, such as John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
What Adam and Eve Didn't Do
Believing has been of pivotal importance since human beings existed. If you go all the way back to the very first human beings, from whom all of us descend, you can see that Adam and Eve failing to believe God was the reason sin entered the world. Since we are all sinners, thanks to the original mother and dad, what Jesus did to pay for our sins was necessary, so that we could get to heaven.
What the Father of Our Faith Did
Abraham, the father of our faith, was accounted by God as righteous because he believed God when he was told something that was impossible in human terms. His name was Abram at the time and his wife was barren.
They were also very old. And yet God promised that his descendants would be too many to count, like the stars. God knows our hearts, and He knew Abram truly believed the promise.
It’s good to remember that God wants us to have greater faith to believe amazing promises, such as, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24.
One Job to Do
When asked what can be done to work the works of God, the answer Jesus gave was, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” –From John 6:28-29.
People have tried to complicate the gospel since the beginning. God gave us ten commandments, for example, and the Jewish people made a list of 613 commandments, which are listed in the Torah.
It’s pretty remarkable that faith in God really just comes down to believing what He says.
The Bible is 66 books long, and it’s deep enough to study it for a thousand lifetimes and still have more to cover. But there’s no need to be intimidated because all we really have to do is believe.
