God's Beauty And Strength In Nature
I don’t think God outright tells unbelievers to look at Christians in order to see evidence of His existence.
Instead, He says to look at nature (see scripture below). The beauty of nature is consciously appreciated by just about everybody, and recent research verifies that being in nature has a therapeutic effect.
Throughout my life as a born-again Christian and follower of Jesus, I’ve developed a theory about the secret power of nature.
The wonderful impact being in nature has on us is a direct result of the fact that all of nature exists in full obedience to God.
A Christian Theory On Nature
Humans have a choice of whether or not to obey
A flower seed that falls or is planted into the ground can’t decide that it wants to be a tree instead. The seed becomes what it was designed to be.
All of nature is the same, in that it does exactly what God intended when He created it.
Human beings are the only creatures made in the image of God, born with a choice of whether to live in harmony with God or in rebellion to His authority.
Rebellion creates chaos in our souls and in our lives.
Obedience isn’t easy to our stubborn natures. When we submit ourselves to God with the right attitude, however, we can become as therapeutic to be around as spending a day in nature.
How to be like a tree
The entire Bible is a letter to us from God, and it teaches us how to live—sort of like instructions that come from a manufacturer of products.
He uses an analogy to show us how to live “in Jesus.”
It says in Colossians 2:6 & 7 to follow him and “let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him.” One result, it says, is that “you will overflow with thankfulness.”
This lines up with my nature theory, especially when I think about trees with branches that all reach up toward heaven like arms raised to praise and thank God.
Then there are young sunflowers, which follow the sun from dawn to dusk and begin again the next morning.
A nature-like attitude
It sounds more palatable to say that our attitudes should resemble nature, as opposed to saying, “Obey God!”
There’s something within us humans that tends to rebel. After all, resistance began with Adam and Eve.
We can really become lights in the darkness when we dig our roots into Jesus and start resembling his natural creation instead of following the world’s rebellious ways.
“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” – Romans 1:20 NLT
